Today's performance horses, more than any other time, work
hard to reach their maximum potential. They are asked to jump
higher, run faster and execute technically difficult maneuvers
better than has ever been done before.
Like today's human athletes, more injuries and pain for our
equine companions is the unfortunate result. Strong drugs
many times are short fixes with less than desirable long-term
side effects.
Fortunately, the horse has benefited from the progress of
modern sports medicine for human athletes. Alternative
treatments such as massage therapy, acupuncture, herbology,
and chiropractic therapies have become widely accepted and
recognized.
Few realize that ancient Chinese and Romans and even our
own Hopi Indians practiced forms of equine massage. It is
surprising that it has not been used more with animals in
modern time. Many problems of the equine are similar to those
of humans that are treated with similar therapies.
